Tahnik & Tahliq

What Is Tahnik & Tahliq?

A Sunnah Rooted in the Time of the Prophet ﷺ

When a child is born, one of the most beloved acts a Muslim family can perform is the Tahnik — the gentle rubbing of softened dates onto the newborn's palate. It is a practice traced directly to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when his companions would bring their newborns to him seeking his blessing. He would soften the date (kurma), place it in the baby's mouth, and make du'a for the child — marking the very first taste with something pure and spiritually meaningful.

Why perform Tahnik & Tahliq?

Alongside Tahnik, the Tahliq — the trimming or shaving of the newborn's hair — is performed as an act of cleanliness and gratitude. Together, these two rituals form a beautiful beginning: the child's first encounter with sweetness, with prayer, and with community.

According to Tafseer Roohul Bayan, the person performing the Tahnik may spiritually impart good character and habits upon the child. This is why it is Sunnah for the ceremony to be conducted by a righteous and pious individual.

”"I had a baby boy, and I brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. He named him Ibraaheem, did Tahnik with some dates and prayed for Allah to bless him, then he gave him back to me."
