It was reported that Abu Musa said: “I had a baby boy, and I brought him to the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam). He named him Ibraaheem, did Tahnik with some dates and prayed for Allah to bless him, then he gave him back to me.” – (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5150; Muslim, 2145).

One of the manifestations of the deep devotion the companions had for the Prophet was that when a child was born in the family, they brought it to him so that he would bless the child and apply the pulp of a kurma (dates) on his palate. Give the child the best first nourishment by Tahnik.

Tahnik is when a soleh and pious person bites or chews on kurma and gives it to the baby so that the first nourishment that reaches the child is kurma and from the mouth of a pious person. It is stated in Tafseer Roohul Bayan that the one who does the Tahnik has a certain effect on the child that the child develops habits similar to his/hers. It is Sunnah to have the Tahnik of the child done on the 7th, 14th or 21st days of the child’s life.

Al-Mawaddah Mosque celebrates the birth of a newborn Muslim by offering the Tahnik ceremony services at the mosque. The service includes the application of the honey into the child’s mouth and the first shaving of the baby’s hair. The service is led by Ustaz Mohd Zaid bin Isahak (Head Dakwah, Al-Mawaddah Mosque).

We offer tahnik service to newly born babies. Our imam will preside this ritual where a tiny portion of sweet date is placed in the mouth of the newborn and lead in the recitation of the dua.
